Future’s Gallery: Personal Data

The Futures Gallery is an exploratory, interactive space encouraging employees and guests to think about emergent issues affecting Capital One customers. The first topic was the Future of Personal Data. Guests are invited to enter and consider their relationship with their personal data, especially as it relates to privacy, security, and convenience. This installation launched at Capital One’s SF Office in January of 2019, and will travel to other Capital One offices. As lead designer and project manager, I was responsible for the concept and delivery of this experience. I managed a team of experience designers to create the initial concept and worked with a local fabricator for build and installation.

Our goal was to create a space that enabled alternative futures and inspired guests to re-frame their relationships to their own personal data. We designed a staged experience that first grounded guests in the present data landscape. After building intrigue, a slight barrier to entry transports the guest into the main experience, where the space transforms as their presence is sensed. The core experience questions what guests value when it comes to their own personal data, and presented a snapshot of their values to compare to other guests who had gone through the experience. I designed the overall aesthetic of the space as well as the user interaction journey. I managed our local fabricator on the project.

At the completion of the experience, attendees are able to see where they stand amongst previous attendees in the form of a data visualization. We prompt our guests to take a moment to think: our customers make choices about their personal data everyday. In choosing what we value about our own data, we hope to bring more intention to the policies and choices we make for our customers. The space was heavily attended by employees and guests, and successfully produced conversations about how Capital One makes choices about customer data.
